Rajasthan at Glance >> Jaipur, The Pink City

Founded in 1727 by the Maharaja of Amber, Sawai Jai Singh II, Jaipur is the former capital of the state of Jaipur. Much famous as the Pink City of India, Jaipur is the capital of the present desert state of Rajasthan. Also aptly called the Paris of India, Jaipur is the first well-planned city of the country, and also probably the most beautiful among the present day Indian cities.

The beautiful city has broad streets (111 ft (34 m) wide) which neatly divides the city into six sectors. The very structure of Jaipur and the architecture of the many palaces and forts of the city remind one of the tastes of the Rajputs and the Royal families.

An amazing place of natural beauty and great history, Jaipur has a thriving tourism industry. The many beautiful palaces of the city much attract the tourists - both Indian and foreign. Interestingly, several old and dilapidated palaces and forts of the city have been converted into wonderful heritage hotels.

Though the entire Jaipur is a beautiful attraction, these are the key attractions of the city: the Hawa Mahal (Palace of Winds), Nahargarh Fort, and Sawai Jai Singh's Observatory (Jantar Mantar). Jaipur has wonderful bazaars also from where one can buy local handicrafts, paintings, embroidered clothes and other objects.

In the present date, Jaipur is the business hub for the people of Rajasthan and a big metropolitan city. The service sector of Jaipur boasts of tourism, real estate, insurance and hotel industries. The city is connected well to the rest of the world, through its gigantic network of airways, railways and roads.
