Rajasthan - The western Indian state much famous for its sand dunes, camels, golden sunsets, forts and palaces, and colorful turbans has a rich and great historical legacy. In fact, Rajasthan History is as lively and interesting as the state itself. The state witnessed the rule of various kingdoms and rulers since time immemorial. Rajasthan’s origin and dates back to as yearly as 1200 A.D. even though some historians opine that Rajasthan’s history dates back to as yearly as 2500 B.C.

In the ancient era Rajasthan was ruled by the Mauryan Empire though Ashoka, the most famous Mauryan Emperor, could never leave much imprint on the desert state. Sometime around 700 A.D. Rajasthan’s control passed into the hands of the valiant Rajputs who ruled over the state for long.

The first external threat to their power came from the Arabs who ran over Sind in 713. Later, around 1001 AD, Mahmud of Ghazni invaded India and marched into Rajasthan. He crushed a big army assembled by the Rajputs. This greatly weakened the Rajputs’s power although they remained in power in the state till the 12th century A.D.

After that, the Pratihars, Chauhans, Parmars, and Chalukyas took control over the state and ruled over it till 1200 A.D. The various Muslim powers -Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Dynasty - became all powerful after that and ruled over the state or parts of it till 1700 A.D. Then, the Marathas and Pindaris controlled the state till the start of 19th century. After which the British took control and continued their dominance over it till 1947.

The British did a good thing. They started the integration of the various provinces of Rajasthan into one state. This long process started in 1948 came to an end in 1956 when it was officially declared as one state with 32 districts and called Rajasthan by the Govt. of India.
