Rajasthan at Glance >> Rajasthan Culture

Even though the history and lifestyle of the people of Rajasthan mainly make the culture of the state unique and much different from others, it is the geography of the state which really defines the culture of the state.

The desert, in fact, has played the most pivotal role in shaping up the Rajasthan Culture. To cope up with the harsh conditions brought about by the barren desert, people of Rajasthan celebrate several festivals and organize fairs on a grand scale in which they participate with much enthusiasm, attired in colorful clothes and attractive jewelry.

While the men sport large colorful turbans, the womenfolk wear heavy jewelry and bright costumes.  Someone has indeed rightly said that the desert state comes alive in a kaleidoscope of colors and activities during the many fairs and key festivals.

People of Rajasthan are highly religious with Hinduism being the dominant religion. Islam, Jainism, Sikhism and Christianity are the other important religions followed by the people of this desert state. Hindi is widely understood and spoken by majority of the people of Rajasthan followed by the local dialects of Hindi such as Rajasthan and Marwari.

Rajasthan’s excellent architecture has also played a great role in shaping up the unique Rajasthan culture. The state boasts of splendid mansions and havelis which throw much light on the rich and royal past of the state. The forts and palaces of Rajasthan, in fact, much define the rich cultural heritage of Rajasthan.
